Myofunctional Therapy

What is Myofunctional Therapy?
If you've made it this far, you're likely wondering 'what is Myofunctinal Therapy'?

Well, to put it simply, you can think of Myofunctional Therapy as Physiotherapy for the muscles of the mouth and of the face. The therapy consists of a series of exercises that are designed to achieve proper tongue posture and nasal breathing.

What if I told you that the cute snoring that your toddler is doing isn't so cute? Or that mouth breathing isn't 'normal'? Teeth grinding? Snoring? None of these habits are considered to be 'normal'. In fact, they are referred to as Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs).

Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs) refer to any disorder of the oral and facial muscles and functions that affect proper oral rest posture . The three main root causes of OMD's are; tongue tie, mouth breathing and oral habits

Why is Proper Oral Posture Important?
Proper growth of the jaw
Healthy Airway
Improved breathing
Improved sleep
Helps prevent malocclusion and orthodontic problems
Helps prevent Orthodontic relapse
Prevent speech problems
Proper Oral Rest Posture

Tongue resting on palate
Tip of the tongue resting on the “Spot”
Lips closed gently together
Nasal breathing - day and night
Teeth slightly apart
The 'spot'
You can think of your tongue as the natural expander and retainer of your teeth. Pretty cool, right? If you have a low tongue posture (tongue rests at the bottom of your mouth), or if you have oral habits such as mouth breathing, or a tongue thrust, then your tongue is not providing support and guidance for your upper arch. Instead, a narrow upper arch will likely develop, which in turn reduces sinus space.
If you're one of the many who have undergone orthodontic treatment 2-3 times due to relapse, then it is very likely that you are suffering from an OMD. You can get orthodontic treatment to straighten your teeth all you want, but at the end of the day, if the underlying cause is not rectified, your teeth will likely shift again.
